A sanctuary at the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains

California interior designer Vanessa Alexander (principal of Alexander Design) created a sanctuary on this unique property in an equestrian neighborhood in Malibu, California.

This serene family home is located at the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains in Bonsall Canyon, and has all the hallmarks of Alexander’s signature low-key luxury complete with nods to Dutch and Belgian style.

Her design team turned a former 1960s ranch-style brick dwelling into a contemporary barn-style home with a striking and classic silhouette defined by the classic single-gable pitch and an exterior cladded entirely in Shou Sugi Ban.

The home feels at ease in its beachside community yet exudes a subtle European elegance with an interior canvas of creamy suede like hand-plastered walls and ceilings punctuated by walnut ceiling beams and a mix of bronze, brass and patina metals throughout.

This project is one of the many highlights in our new March 2022 book WORLD'S FINEST HOMES, featuring 25 wonderful residential houses from all over the world.
